SEO Glossary For Beginners
Here is a glossary of Search Engine Optimization. These are some of the most common terms used in search engine optimization.
301 Redirect: It is used to permanently redirect a webpage to a different URL. Or in other words, it’s a way to assign a new URL to a webpage and when someone tries to open the webpage with the old address it will automatically redirect to the newer one.
Anchor Text: Visible text for a hyperlink.
Alt Tag: When an image present in a webpage is not loaded, the Alt tag is displayed on the place of the image to show what that image is about. Search Engine crawlers read the images with their Alt tags.
Backlink: Backlinks are incoming links of your website that you get from other websites.
Black Hat SEO: Optimizing a website using tricks and techniques that are not supported by search engines, is known as Black Hat SEO. Search Engines penalize those sites that use such techniques.
Cloaking: It is a technique to display a different page to search engine spiders from the page that is displayed to the user. Search engines may penalize such sites.
Crawler: Also known as Spider or Robot, Crawlers are the algorithms that read every page on WWW and index them in a database in order to display them on a search query.
Heading Tags: HTML tags (<h1>, <h2>, <h3>..) that are used to make some text large and bold to highlight them to user as well as search engines.
Hidden Text: Text that is made invisible to human visitors but accessible for search engine crawlers are known as Hidden text. Text can be made invisible by setting their visibility to hidden or display to none. Search engines do not like such type of contents in a webpage.
Keyword: A term used for the words or phrases that are typed in the search engine’s search box to search for something.
Keyword Density: Indicate the density of a keyword in a webpage respective to all keywords. If a keyword has a high density in a webpage, there are more chances to come to that page in search engine ranking with that keyword. It is also known as keyword weight.
Landing Page: A webpage that is optimized in such a way that new visitors visit that page as a first page on the website.
Link Popularity: Link Popularity of a website tells that how many sites link to that site. It’s one of the most important factors that search engines use to determine SERP rankings.
Meta Description Tag: It’s a short description of a webpage shown in SERPs to represent a webpage. It has an enormous significance in on-page optimization.
Meta Keywords Tag: Contains all the keywords related to a webpage. These keywords are only readable by search engines and not shown to users.
Reciprocal Link: Way to linking two websites with each other i.e. First site links to the second site and the second site also link to the first site.
Robots.txt: It’s a text file that guides search engine robots to what to index and what not to index in the search engine database. By specifying in robots.txt file, we can hide a particular webpage from search engines.
SERP: Acronym for Search Engine Results Page. It’s the page containing a list of web pages that a search engine displays in response to a search query.
Stop Word: Words that have no significance in searches like and, of, to, for, the, etc. Search engines ignore these words while matching the search terms with page contents.
Title Tag: The Title tag is displayed on top of the browser window and works something like the identity of a webpage. It has importance for search engines as well as human visitors.
