The 80/20 law, which applies primarily to Google but can also be applicable to other search engines. There are two main forms of SEO – on-page optimization and off-page optimization, and the rule is to split the time spent on both the types – 80 per cent for off-page optimization and 20 per cent for on-page optimization.

Although Google keeps changing its preferences for evaluating the webpages it is mainly considered that while Google evaluates a webpage to rank it in respect to a keyword, it gives weightage according to this ratio. The webpage is valued by the search engine by giving 80% weightage to its link popularity and 20% to its keyword relevance with the webpage.

So only using Meta tags or sprinkling a few keywords on your website alone will not be successful. And the prevalence of links without on-page support would be less effective. That is why this rule should be followed by an SEO professional.

The logic behind the Rule:

The logic behind the 80/20 rule is quite natural, as on-page optimization help search engines to index a site properly where off-page optimization is the thing that determines the popularity and quality of the webpage. On-page optimization allows to find out the relevancy of the webpage with the keyword and the link popularity gives information about the quality and likability of the webpage. Both factors help search engines to differentiate between spammers and actual websites having qualitative information.

Another fact that proves the rule’s necessity is that, the on-page factors are completely controlled by the webmasters. Therefore it is the subject to abuse or manipulates the indexing criteria of the search engines. On the other hand, off-page optimization is entirely controlled by the other webmasters which means it’s not easy to manipulate the search engine’s analysis. And that’s the thing exactly Google and other search engines want to serve the genuine search results to its users.
